Dream Dialogue
Power of Dreams
The enigmatic power of dreams has always fascinated me, from heart-pounding nightmares to wistful daydreams, to the wealth of dream-like imagery throughout the history of art. I see my paintings much like a dream theater where a cast of characters cross a mindscape, and a story unfolds in the visual language of symbols. These characters are drawn from different cultures of the world, contemporary as well as historical, and also from folk art.
Artistic Influences
I grew up in classrooms with windows facing east, where the Wasatch mountains came right down into the school playground. Studying the contoured patterns of foothills and scrub oak stimulated my imagination in anthropomorphic animation. I secretly drew instead of listening to my teachers. Throughout the years when looking for artistic inspiration, I have opened up books, from primeval to medieval, seeking images to express the wild-hearted wonder of seeing through a child's eyes.
Water Color-Collage
My use of traditional water color as a medium of expression is altered by collaged layers and patterns. This cut and paste technique fractures the conventional water color surface in much the way I perceive the incongruent and surprising elements of a dream provoke our conscious mind. |
